One of the most common types of fence is the picket fence, especially the white picket fence. It's almost a stereotype of the typical suburban home, with one of these fences around the yard. Panel fences are another popular option, especially in situations where you want privacy. These make good privacy or semi-privacy fences because they have little, if any, space that you can see through. These fences are typically built from wood, but they are also available in vinyl. Either way, you can buy pre-built panels that simply need to have posts and caps added to erect the fence.
Chain link is another common type of fencing, generally used where aesthetics are not critical. Because there's very little that can be done design wise, they're not the most attractive type of fence. And they are one of the worst for privacy, although you can get slats that weave into the links to help improve this aspect.
There are also quite a few specialized types of fences that are designed for specific uses. Electronic pet fences are a good example of this. They can be buried underground or they can be wireless. They work with a special receiving collar to help train your pet to stay within a certain area confined by the fence.
Other types of fencing, such as welded wire, are better suited for larger animals. These fences can be used to keep animals out of your yard or they can be used to confine animals inside a certain space, such as keeping horses within a certain area on a farm, for example.
